I’m not particularly ‘into’ patterns, I tend to wear plain clothes and prefer looking at images that tell a story rather than particularly ‘just looking nice’, so I was going to forego this one but for patterns do have their place, and I’d had such amazing feedback from the Adobe Mentors team and other contributors on the previous day’s challenge (2d to 3d characters), I figured I’d give it a go.

First step: creating or finding the right image. Having quite a few doggie contacts and being a massive dog lover it seemed logical to start with something relating to dogs. Looking back through my face book uploads, I found a logo idea I’d created a few years ago and figured it might work.

I think this might look quite nice on a shirt or blouse, maybe for a more mature person, but it’s a little bit niche. I wanted to create something a little more commercial that would appeal to a wider community.

I made this little boat earlier in the year as a logo idea for a client who wanted me to make something quickly as an idea, but then chose a more realistic representation of his yacht, so this little boat was redundant, but I quite liked it:

First, I created my tile. The balance seems to work best if I aim to but my middle image about 3/5th across:

This worked, it repeated nicely…

And then I created this mock up from an Adobe Stock image:

The feedback on the Adobe Discord channel has been fabulous. Its great to shar work with other professionals who see not only the end result but can also appreciate the technical skills involved in creating vector artwork.

I’ve been doing it a long time, but there’s always something new and I love to push myself to keep looking and learning.

So, if you are looking for a fabric design, maybe for your restaurant furnishings, or for a corporate business uniform, I’m here to talk to you about what we can do!
